I Don't Think So.

	Allies + Phyrexians = Slivers?
I Don't Think So

When I first saw/heard the (then) rumors that Slivers were returning w/M14, I was ecstatic! Woo hoo! Slivers have always been one of my favorite creature types/tribes. With their unique hiveness, they were, and remain, a powerful group of creatures.

Then I read a little closer, and my ecstacy turned to WTF?!?!?

Let me quote you the wiki about Slivers:

Slivers are creatures that share a hive mind, which allows them to share their abilities with other nearby slivers.

Slivers are depicted with an armored vertebrate body, a long, bifurcated whip-like tail, one arm with a single talon for a hand, and a head with an armored crest. Variations on this appearance exist in accordance with the abilities each has to offer to the hive.

	(emphasis added by me)

Now look at the "Slivers" shown here as spoilers. Two Arms. Two Legs. No tail.

Read the rules text. "Sliver creatures you control...", not "All Slivers..."

These are not Slivers, in my book. Call them what you will, but these are not Slivers. To me, they are a cheap knockoff. Maybe call them Phyrexian Allies. Because they don't look or act like Slivers.Â

You can call it a camel, but if it walks like a duck, quacks like duck, flies like a duck, and poops like a duck.... it's a friggin duck!

	Â

Dark Wars is, was, and always will be the premiere multiplayer FFA Player Run Event. In years past, it has always been a Classic event, in both senses of that word. But now, it's time to dig deeper. Now, we head into the full darkness that is Legacy. This is the dark lair of Force of Will and the turn-0 kill. This is not the kiddie pool. These are shark infested waters over a razor sharp reef. The beach is swarming with ANTs. Swim at your peril.Â

	Â

	Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth

	Â

WotC has a history and reputation for making poorly timed, and poorly presented, announcements that affect the players in a major way. A prime example being when they fixed (by knocking a quite a few blocks out of the format) Extended at the start of PTQ Season for PT Amsterdam with a flippant “by the way” article. Or the “Your room is gone. Now!" announcement tucked away on the MTGO blog.

	Â

In my last article, I started talking a bit about the Modern meta, and how event results were missing. After I submitted that article, Â WotC once again showed remarkable ineptitude in their handling of announcements by letting us know off-handedly in a forum reply that they had changed their daily Scheduled Event results reporting policy two weeks prior to telling us.Â

	Â

I hurried and threw a quick addendum onto the article and resubmitted. Now that I have a bit more time, I'd like to tackle this horse apple in a little more detail.

	Â

Once again, here is the complete text of their “announcement”:

	Â

“Sorry for the delay in responding here.Â

	Â

In regards to the recent reduced event coverage, this was a conscious decision by the Wizards R&D team that wasn’t made lightly. Ultimately, we feel that publishing every deck list leads to solving constructed formats far too efficiently, resulting in early stagnation that’s not fun for anybody. We still want to show new deck ideas every day and provide insight into the Magic play environment, but we don’t want metagame development to become purely a function of data analysis. Going forward, we’ll still provide the winning deck lists from all Premier Event top 8’s. We will also show the 4-0 and 3-1 deck lists for one completed Daily Event in each format per day.”

	Â

Personally, I think they waited until after the Community Cup Challenge to make this statement so the players at the CCC couldn't ask about it. (Also so I wouldn't raise a ruckus during the CCC, because they know I would have screamed blue murder and disrupted an otherwise enjoyable event.)

	Â

So let's take these one at a time. Keep in mind I can only speak for the Modern side of things, but I assume the same reasoning would apply to the other non-rotating formats.

	Â

Sorry for the delay in responding here.Â

	Â

	Apology not accepted.

	Â

…this was a conscious decision by the Wizards R&D team that wasn’t made lightly.

	Â

I don't think “conscious” really applies, and that it was made lightly. A little more thinking and foresight could have gone a long way.

	Â

…publishing every deck list leads to solving constructed formats far too efficiently…Â

	Â

Uhhh… Yeah. Let's see. Modern is over a year old. Which means WotC has been publishing the results daily for over a year. I have been publishing new winning decks, often several at a time, almost every week in my articles for almost a year now. Is Modern “solved”? Is Legacy? Is Classic? Is Pauper? I don't think so. In fact, the Modern meta is wider than ever. I think. I don't know anymore because WotC won't tell us.

	Â

The only formats WotC could conceivably be referring to are Standard and Block. And I hear those gets “solved” rather quickly, regardless. After all, the card pool is only so big. I see draft strategy and constructed articles dealing with Standard and Block everywhere. So why is every other format being “punished” for Standard and Block being “easy”?

	Â

We still want to show new deck ideas every day and provide insight…  Â

	Â

Uh huh. Reading the “new deck ideas” provided on the mothership is often less than insightful. Many of the “new deck ideas” presented fall flat when taken out for prolonged test runs. Yes, there have been a few nice ones, especially from deck crafter extraordinaire Gavin Verhey. But they are few and far between. The majority (of non-Gavin decks) presented on the mothership are just… Meh! I believe that the brewers out here in the real world are where the new deck ideas come from. Not from the mothership.Â

	Â

…we don’t want metagame development to become purely a function of data analysis.Â

	Â

I thought the metagame was data analysis? Hello? Isn't developing metagame information based on looking at what's being played, what's doing what, how well is this or that performing, and how does this match up against that? That sounds like data analysis to me. If metagame development isn't data analysis, what is it? A Ouija Board?

	Â

I've seen the Modern metagame reports provided on the mothership. They are vague and somewhat inaccurate, with no real insight into what's really happening in the Modern world. I take Modern meta information from the mothership – outside of actual results - with several grains of salt.

	Â

Going forward, we’ll still provide the winning deck lists from all Premier Event top 8’s. We will also show the 4-0 and 3-1 deck lists for one completed Daily Event in each format per day.

	Â

Fine and dandy. Not. How do you chose which one event gets published? The one with “the usual suspects”? The one that show innovative decks? Pick one at random? This is nothing but a tease. I feel that the non-rotating formats (Legacy, Classic, Modern, and Pauper) are being harshly and unfairly “punished” for Standard and Block's limited card pool.

	Â

I also believe this policy will have the effect of narrowing the Modern meta in the long haul. In the Modern world, Jund and Affinity have shown themselves to be the “go to” decks in an unknown environment. Since the Modern meta is ipso facto “unknown” now, this means players (especially players new to the competitive scene) will have even more reason to play Jund and Affinity. Modern may become nothing more than a series of Jund vs Affinity, and mirror matches. I sincerely hope this turns out not to be the case.

	Â

	Please reconsider this policy change.

Unlike 99.99999% of the magic online community, every single person in the clan has made an oath to never concede in the face of defeat or out of anger, in hopes that we may end the spineless act of conceding. Alas brothers and sisters our efforts have been futile in cleasing the MGTO comminty. Thus for our own ammusment I think it would be very funny to post some of our best troll screen shots. Seeing our opponents get angry and concede, then later laughing is certainly the cat's meow.Â

With that said i would like to start this thread with a simple turn 4 troll with no other than Mr.Aeons himself Emrakul.

	Â

I do hope you all post more and better ones than this!Â

Once more into the breach! In conjunction with Wotc, and with support from Alphabot and clan CerealKillaz, I am pleased to announce a very unique event:

	Pwn The Poobah!

This is a Player Run Event where not only can you win fabulous prizes, but you can also win a chance to represent us, the Online Player Community, at the Community Cup Challenge directly!

My instructions were simple: "Hold a Magic Online tournament and place four users as the winners."

The "Pwn The Poobah" comes into play Thursday during the Multiball portion of the Community Cup Challenge. As a reward for making it to the T4 of this event, the T4 players may serve as "proxy members" of the Community Team, and will play a match against WotC employees. If the T4 player wins, they’ll score on behalf of the Community Team for the Multiball round of the Community Cup Challenge. If they lose, WotC gets the points.

	Â

Here's how the PRE portion works: We will start with X rounds of Swiss pairing, the number of rounds depending on the number of players. This will be followed by a T8 cutoff. The T8 will play to T4, and stop. This T4 will be my minions ("Team Blippy") at the Community Cup Challenge.

If time permits, the T4 will continue to play for position.

	Tuesday, October 23rd
530PM PDT / 930PM EDT
Format: Constructed Modern
Registration is now open at Gatherling
X rounds Swiss pairing followed by T8 playoff.

	Each T4 player will receive:
20 Tickets bot credit at Alphabot
10 Tickets from clan CerealKillaz
A chance to play for Community Team points in the Community Cup Challenge

Door Prizes courtesy of clan CerealKillaz
1 Premium Deck Series: Slivers
1 Alara Foil Booster

	Â

Here's how the Community Cup Challenge portion works: At the appointed time, the T4 player will make a table labeled "CCC Pwn The Poobah" in the Anything Goes/Getting Serious room. This table must be Constructed Modern, best two of three, watchable, and timed at thirty minutes. The appointed Poobah will join, and the mayhem will commence!

Scoring for this portion of the event is done by WotC, not me. But please do keep me informed of results!

	Thursday, October 25th
Multiball portion of the Community Cup Challenge begins at 4PM Pacific
Pwn The Poobah Format: Constructed Modern
Matches will be played in the Anything Goes/Getting Serious room.
Player must use decks as registered in PRE.
Poobahs must use pre-registered decks.

	Â

	Don't Quit

	Â

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,Â

When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,Â

When the funds are low and the debts are high,Â

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,Â

When care is pressing you down a bit,Â

Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

	Â

Life is queer with its twists and turns,Â

As every one of us sometimes learns,Â

And many a failure turns about,Â

When he might have won had he stuck it out;Â

Don't give up though the pace seems slow--Â

You may succeed with another blow.

	Â

Often the goal is nearer than,Â

It seems to a faint and faltering man,Â

Often the struggler has given up,Â

When he might have captured the victor's cup,Â

And he learned too late when the night slippedÂ

	Â

	down,Â

How close he was to the golden crown.

	Â

Success is failure turned inside out--Â

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,Â

And you never can tell how close you are,Â

It may be near when it seems so far,Â

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--Â

It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

	Â
